Nick Vrettos and John Taylor were distrustful enough of the rain forecast to join Bob Austin at 9:00 Wednesday morning for the regular ride from Liberty Live Church. It turned out to be a cool, dry, leisurely and highly convivial event taking the threesome down Croaker Road for a duck into Ware Creek Manor, a ride down to the end of Croaker at Sycamore Landing and a steep round trip to Croaker Landing. There Bob related the story about how, way back in the last century, a group of York River watermen formed a kind of Mafia to control fishing trade, the feared leader of which gang assumed the title of “Il capo di tutti crappie.”
The intrepid three continued to York River State Park for a well-earned 20 minute break before returning to their cars and repairing to Honey Butter for a hearty brunch. They logged just under 20 miles.
Rain showers finally began as they were leaving the premises.
