KILMARNOCK, Va. — This fall, cyclists from across the Mid-Atlantic are invited to discover a side of Virginia’s Northern Neck that is best experienced on two wheels.

River Ride 2026 will take place Saturday, October 10. Riders will depart from Kilmarnock, VA to explore a landscape of winding wooded lanes, quiet farm roads, historic communities and countryside dressed for autumn. Riders can choose from 10-, 17-, 29- and 70-mile routes, creating options for families and casual cyclists as well as experienced riders looking for a full day on the bike.

Along the way, rest stops will give participants opportunities to refuel and take in the surroundings, while an interactive Ride With GPS map will help riders discover historic sites and attractions near the routes.

Long known for its waterways, seafood and sailing, Virginia’s Northern Neck also offers miles of scenic backroads that remain relatively undiscovered as a cycling destination. River Ride aims to change that by bringing back a regional cycling tradition that once drew riders from throughout Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay region.

“At one point in the 2010s, the River Ride consistently drew hundreds of riders to town,” said this year’s ride organizer Matt Cunningham. “We’re excited to show those riders – and a whole new generation of cyclists – that this area is still an incredible cycling destination.”

The ride also has a larger purpose. Proceeds will support the Northern Neck Bike Club, a nonprofit organization working to create positive outdoor experiences through bikes, trails and community. Funds raised through River Ride 2026 will help support the club’s effort to develop a new mountain bike trail network at Town Centre Park in Kilmarnock.

For outdoor travelers, cycling enthusiasts and anyone curious about exploring a quieter corner of coastal Virginia, River Ride 2026 is an invitation to experience the Northern Neck at the unique, meaningful pace of a bicycle.

  • 2027 Katy Tour, Misouri / Kansas / Texas
    Hits: 91
    Dates Description
    Sat 9/25 to Sat 10/2

    From Pam Tomczak:

"Simply through word of mouth, what started out as a bucket list birthday gift to myself has blossomed into a gravel ride adventure for a small group of WABbits ... I thought I'd send out the details of this trip to all, in case anyone else might want to join us.  The Katy Trail is a 238-mile long rail trail in Missouri, and it's America's longest rail trail. This tour covers about 180 miles of the former Missouri- Kansas- Texas (MKT) Railroad Corridor from St. Charles to Augusta.  The tour operator is Road Scholar, a non-profit organization (founded as Elderhostel in 1975) focused on providing learning adventures for older adults. I, personally, have never travelled with Road Scholar, but I know people who have, and they all rave about their programs. I am so excited to be able to explore this trail in the company of my WAB friends!  The tour dates are Sept.25 - Oct. 2, 2027."

For more information on the tour, check here: Katy Trail Missouri Bike Tour for Seniors

If you are interested, feel free to register your name on our ride calendar at Katy tour so others can see who might be going.  This may generate additional interest among the WAB community.

Note:  This is a non-WAB event.  Participants are not covered by WAB insurance.
