Since I suggested this unusual route for the Wednesday Wonderers ride this week I thought I’d make a post to explain the route a little. The ride starts from 4-mile creek park so about a 45 min drive from Williamsburg. But is makes it a shorter ride into Richmond. The route takes the VCT into Richmond and winds through Browns Island then to the Tyler Potterfield pedestrian bridge that crosses the James. You’ll pass some interesting murals along the way. On the other side of the bridge you can bike up to a scenic lookout with a nice view of the river and Richmond city. On the way back we’ll pass over Church Hill which was on the UCI Championship course in 2016 (I think). I originally documented this route years ago and Reed $ Karen Nester recently improved it by including Church Hill. You won’t see it but the route passes close by the entrance to the train tunnel that collapsed in 1925 burying the train and killing 4 men. (Locomotive and cars still buried). And there is another scenic lookout on Church Hill.
If you go be prepared for a longer day than the normal 33 mile ride because of the slow going in some areas as you go on some narrow paths and do some sightseeing. But if you have never ridden into Richmond on a bicycle before I think you will find it worthwhile. Also be prepared to do some climbing as RWG has this as over 1000’.
Jim Gullo will lead the C pace and Reed & Karen will lead the B pace both using same 33 mile route and starting at 9:30.
