Response to Steve’s question concerning pace lines for B pace rides was created by Will Ameen (Weameen@aol.com)
Good Evening Steve . Thanks for the question. I lead a few B Pace rides for the Club and I’ll try to answer your question. You will find that the C pace rides average 12-14 mph at the end of the ride. The C pace rides tend to be more about smelling the roses and chatting with your fellow cyclists. The B pace rides average 14-16 mph and we do tend to be group together in a pace line for safety on trail and to maintain that advertised pace . Riding on the  VCT at 14-16 mph requires greater attention to on coming riders and as such we tend to ride in single file . Also we become a bit more efficient when riding single file. We each pull from the front”  for a couple of minutes and then rotate to the back so the riders don’t get overworked and exhausted. For those that don’t wish “to pull” they are welcome to stay toward the back and or ride second from the back. As a B pace leader , we often lead from the back to ensure that all the riders are comfortable with the pace and I try my best to bring the group in together . We really try not to drop any rider in the group. The B+ pace  16-18 mph and above pace rides are definitely geared toward pace lining and they put in the miles.
I invite to join us on a B pace ride and I think you will find it enjoyable and inspiring. Our Monday Charles City rides offer both B and C pace rides and we do the same route on that given day. This allows for someone to test the B pace waters  and if they find they don’t like the speed and are uncomfortable with riding a little closer together , they can drop back knowing that the C pace group will only be a few minutes behind. Come out and give it a try . I’ll be leading a Tuesday Sunset ride out of Billsburg on June 25 if you are interested.
