Although I didn't actually ride bike Virginia this year. I agree with Jim. I had a credit to use since they postponed the event for over three years. They should have refunded the money immediately, but that is a separate issue. I decide not to ride it this year because of the poor weather forecast (not their fault). However, reading their description of the event they were cutting back on everything that made bike Virginia.so good in the past.  Other than having a sag wagon you could have done away with the event.  Come on no rest stops just comfort stops with no water or snacks.
I said I didn't ride the ride, but I did spend the weekend there sightseeing., and  i drove by many of the routes. The comfort stations. Were poorly marked. and in many cases just in empty parking lots. One such stop we drove by and had lunch in a restaurant. a block away. It was amazing how many rides we saw stopping by the restaurant shaking their heads,.not knowing where the comfort station was.
There were routes in the county but there was way too many in the city.
Also, for an event that was for everyone, in my opinion it was too hilly.  We stop by President Wilson Museum and saw many riders walking their bike up the hill.
Bottom line I will never do another Bike Virigina
To answer Gary Smith"s question.  If it is not broken don't fix it, in the past it was a great event

I'm willing to continue the discussion in subsequent newsletters, if the board feels it is justified. It seems to me that concrete suggestions on how to improve BikeVA would be useful, as it definitely has had a stellar history and it would be a shame for it to die.

In reference to the latest issue of the Flying Wheel newsletter, I was wondering if Jim Gullo and Jane Elkin went on different events – both were called Bike Virginia 2023 and both transited between Staunton and Harrisonburg in the Shenandoah Valley but each author reported diametrically different experiences.  Do we have a third opinion to break the tie?
