Both WAB and RABA canceled their group rides on Saturday, April 2, but a few hardy souls ventured out on their bikes anyway. Ken Robertson, a RABA member who I have held joint club rides with over the last couple of years, set out from Richmond with two friends to celebrate his 65th birthday with a 65 mile ride. They were soaked by the time they arrived at Cul’s Courthouse Grille. A little over an hour later they headed back to Richmond – it was still raining.

WAB riders descended to the town of Washington NC to enjoy the 12th annual Coastal North Carolina bicycle event. Although the weather forecast was unsettled, it turned out to be a perfect weekend to ride. Under the guidance of Deana Sun, 16 WAB members enjoyed three days of riding various lengths from 27 to 60 miles. The members would gather at “RV Park” to start their day. The routes took us to the oldest town in NC, Bath established in 1706, as well as to a rest stop at “the Meat Stop”. Roads were flat and the gardens we passed in full bloom.
The rides were capped off with three dinners in town and a street party on Saturday night. Many members also enjoyed the free beer!
