    1 Pedal the Parkway

Free! No Cars for eight miles on the Colonial Parkway! The Parkway will be closed to motor vehicles from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM.  Rain or shine. One starting location this year! Start at the Newport Avenue entrance to the Parkway in Williamsburg. Parking available in the lot at the corner of Newport Ave. and Nassau Street. Free helmets while they last for children who participate in the Bicycle Skills Rodeo.

2 Bicycling 101   

Interested in tips on how to safely navigate roads, turns, and traffic on your bike? Experienced riders from the local bike club will demonstrate the safe way to ride on our roads and bike paths. They will offer tips they use to ensure as safe a ride as possible. A 5-mile ride will follow the demonstrations. (Must be 12 years old or older to ride with the group.) Meet at Room D at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center at 2:00 PM. Call Mary at 229-4046.

3 Evening Ride 

Join the Reddings at 6:00 PM at Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Merchants Square for a 12-15 mile casual ride in the Queens Lake area. Call 220-8236. 

4 Yorktown Battlefield Ride. Mary and Jim Osborn will lead a casual 14 mile ride on the Tour Roads.  Meet at 10 AM behind York Hall at the corner of Ballard and Main in Yorktown.  An optional lunch will follow at the Carrot Tree.  Call or e-mail by noon on May 3.  229-0655 or osbornva@cox.net.

6 “Work at home” Bikers Ride

8 Cap2Cap Century, Half Century, Quarter Century & Family Ride 

Start at the Chickahominy Riverfront Park & choose your distance. Family Ride ($25) is on the completed portion of the Virginia Capital Trail. The centuries are on scenic Route 5 and adjacent back roads. $40 pre-registration by April 15 includes lunch & rest stops. 9 Mother’s Day Ride

15 Tour de Chesapeake 

Join riders from all over the state for a variety of rides from 15 – 62 miles in flat Mathews County. Self-paced.

Adult - $60, Teen (13-17) - $40, Youth (7-12) - $25

16 Children’s Bike Ride  

All children welcome with their parents. Ride 1-12 miles on the Virginia Capital Trail with riders from the local bike club. Meet at Jamestown HS parking lot at 2:00 PM. FREE helmets while they last! 17 Evening Ride

22 High Bridge Trail Ride

23 Adopt-a-Highway Ride

Meet with a group of bicyclists at 4557 Ware Creek Road at 1:00 PM for an official VDOT clean-up of a portion of Ware Creek Road. A bike ride will follow the clean-up. Call Bob at 566-3769.

Mark Your Calendars! Saturday, July 10, Park to Park Bicycle Tour, 8am-2pm Upper County Park

This bicycle tour starts at Upper County Park with visits to Little Creek Reservoir Park, Chickahominy Riverfront Park and Freedom Park! Ride options of 15, 25 and 52 miles. Cool off after your ride with a dip in the pool at Upper County Park. The registration fee is $15 onsite OR $10 if you pre-register. Children ages 10 and younger are FREE, but must ride on a trailer bike, tandem or in a trailer. Registration fee includes refreshments at rest stops, admittance to the Upper County Park pool, canoe rentals at Little Creek Reservoir, highlighted maps, support vehicles to help out tired riders, plus LUNCH after the ride at Upper County Park! 14th Annual Pedal the Parkway Saturday, May 1 - (details of text to be clarified and cleaned up) 

Free to the public! No cars on eight miles of the Colonial Parkway! Join over 1000 other cyclists of all ages and abilities as they bike the Colonial Parkway which will be closed to motorized vehicles from the Newport Avenue exit in Williamsburg to the Jamestown Information Station (one mile east of Jamestown on the Colonial Parkway) from 8:00 AM –  1:00 PM, rain or shine. One starting location this year! Start at the Newport Avenue entrance to the Parkway in Williamsburg. Free helmets while they last for children who participate in the Bicycle Skills Rodeo. A rest stop with free refreshments will be located at the College Creek pull-off near Jamestown. Call 229-0096 for additional information. 

Free helmets will be available for children who participate in the Bicycle Skills Rodeo at one of the pull-offs on the Colonial Parkway. Helmets will be fitted by members of the Active Williamsburg Alliance and the Williamsburg Area Bicyclists. 

Parking will be available in the lot at the corner of Newport Ave. and Nassau Street.  

7th Annual Cap2Cap Century, Half Century, Quarter Century, and Family Ride  Saturday, May 8 

Pick one of two simultaneous starting locations, either the Chickahominy Riverfront Park here in Williamsburg, or Rocketts Landing in downtown Richmond for this year's Cap2Cap ride.  Choose your distance (100, 50 or 25 miles) and enjoy well-designed and well-supported routes that will bring you back to your starting location.  Routes will take you through the back roads of Charles City County, as well as along portions of the Virginia Capital Trail currently under construction.  When completed, the Virginia Capital Trail will be a shared-use scenic, interpretive, bike-pedestrian trail that will showcase the many historic and natural amenities within the corridor. 

The 15 mile Family Ride ($25 per family) will be on the completed portion of the Virginia Capital Trail in James City County and runs from 8:00 AM - Noon. Mass start times for the other distances: Century Ride 7:30 AM, Half Century Ride 8:30 AM, Quarter Century Ride 9:00 AM. The routes close at 4:30 PM. The $40 registration fee (increases begin April 15, pre-registration closes May 5) includes vehicular support service along the route, rest stops, lunch and of course, schwag. The City of Williamsburg is promoting the use of alternative transportation on National Bike to Work Day.  The City’s program is designed to encourage people working in the City of Williamsburg to ride a bike or walk to work.  Many local businesses and organizations are sponsoring the event. If you can’t bike or walk, the City encourages carpooling or the use of public transportation.

To encourage biking or walking to work, Energizing Stations located throughout the City, will be handing out bottled water and granola bars to all commuters between 7 AM and 9 AM.  And while you are there, you can register for prizes from local merchants.   
 

Organizations Working to Promote Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities, Safety, and Transportation Improvements in the Greater Williamsburg Area 

Historic Triangle Bicycle Advisory Committee (HTBAC)

Established in 1993, the purpose of HTBAC is to help plan bicycle facilities, promote bicycle safety, and recommend transportation improvements to enhance bicycling opportunities in James City County, Williamsburg, and York County. The committee meets quarterly (3rd Mondays in January, April, July, and October at 6:00 PM) and encourages input from citizens. Meetings for 2009 are in Yorktown. Active Williamsburg Alliance (AWA)

Formed in 2005, AWA is a community advocacy group dedicated to making the Williamsburg area a safer and easier place to bike, walk, or run. With its natural beauty and unique historical heritage, Williamsburg can become a national model for active living. To help celebrate May Is Bike Month, AWA members will be fitting helmets for children on Pedal the Parkway. AWA is a membership organization and a Chapter of BikeWalk Virginia Trails.
